2025 The Electric State Hollywood Science Fiction Movie is made and directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. The story was written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and is inspired by a 2018 illustrated book by Simon Stålenhag. The movie features Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan (who plays two different roles), Jason Alexander, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Giancarlo Esposito, and Stanley Tucci.
Plans for a movie based on the book were first announced in 2017, with Andy Muschietti involved. The Russo brothers joined the project in December 2020. Universal Pictures got the rights before Netflix took over in June 2022. Most of the cast was revealed between June 2022 and November 2024. Filming happened in Atlanta, Georgia, in the fall of 2022. The movie had a budget of around $320 million, making it one of the most expensive films ever made.
The Electric State had its first showing on February 24, 2025, at Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, California. It was then released on Netflix on March 14, and the reviews from critics were not very positive.

Story
The story takes place in an alternate version of the 1990s. There was a war between humans and robots, which left the world in chaos. With help from Ethan Skate, the CEO of a company called Sentre, who made a technology called Neurocaster that allowed humans to upload their minds into drone robots, humans won the war. Robots were then sent to a place called the Exclusion Zone. Because of this technology, many people stopped living normal lives and instead lived in a virtual world, letting robots do most of the work.

In 1994, a young girl named Michelle lives with her neglectful foster father, Ted. Years earlier, she was in a car accident with her family, and she believes her parents and brother died in the crash. Since then, she has moved between foster homes. At school, she has problems because she refuses to use the Neurocaster technology to take virtual classes.
One day, a robot named Cosmo, who is based on a cartoon character that Michelle’s dead younger brother Christopher used to watch, finds her. Cosmo can only communicate by using gestures and a few pre-recorded words, but he convinces her that he is controlled by Christopher. Michelle and Cosmo start a journey across a broken, harsh world to find Christopher. Along the way, they meet Keats, a veteran, and Herman, a robot who can change shapes. Eventually, they meet a group of robots in the Exclusion Zone led by a robot named Mr. Peanut.
There, they meet Dr. Clark Amherst and his robot friend P.C. Dr. Amherst explains that after Christopher was in a coma after the accident, Sentre used his intelligence to create the Neurocaster technology. This helped humans win the war against the robots. But when Christopher unexpectedly woke up thirteen months later, Dr. Amherst made a way for Christopher’s mind to free itself. Sentre, led by Colonel Bradbury, captured Christopher, killed Dr. Amherst, and destroyed the robots’ home.
Determined to save her brother, Michelle and P.C. sneak into Sentre’s headquarters with help from Keats and Herman. Meanwhile, the other robots fight against Skate’s drone army. Disgusted with Skate, Bradbury switches sides and helps Peanut face Skate. Michelle discovers Christopher in a comatose state, with his mind trapped inside the Neurocaster system.
In the virtual world, Christopher tells Michelle that his mind is what powers Skate’s drones and that he wants to be free. Michelle disconnects him, which causes his body to die. Christopher’s death stops all of Sentre’s drone operations.

After the events, Skate is arrested and the world starts to rebuild from the destruction caused by the war and greedy corporations. Michelle then shares her story with the world, revealing how Neurocaster technology has impacted people’s lives and encourages those who want to live peacefully to go to the Exclusion Zone. Cosmo’s body is left in a junkyard, but he gets up again, suggesting that part of Christopher’s mind might still be inside him.
