Story
In the year 1996, in San Javier, a scientist named Richard Quinn is looking for the supposedly mythical chupacabra. He is a doctor for the government and believes that its healing properties will revolutionize medicine. He chases it after finding one with a cub in an old mine. She hides her cub in order to scare away the scientists who are pursuing her after she is hit by a vehicle.
13-year-old Alex travels to Mexico to meet his extended family for the first time after his father Beto passed away from cancer. His father had planned the trip for them both. Alex meets his grandfather Chava, a former lucha libre champion, Memo, an energetic cousin who is obsessed with wrestling, and Luna, a fearless hip cousin. On Alex’s first night, just as he is beginning to get his bearings, he comes across a young chupacabra cub. He finds it licking a cut on his hand when he wakes up. As Alex acknowledges they are not emphatically respected, he doesn’t say anything.
Luna takes Memo and Alex into town to look for Chava shortly after that. She makes sense of that he frequently strays (he might have Alzheimer’s illness). Alex sees a miniature colorful figure in the market. The seller tells him it’s a chupacabra, which Alex says isn’t so bad.
Chava is seen by the kids walking with a billy goat back on the road. He got it, yet can’t make sense of why. On their re-visitation of the farm, they go over certain men cautiously looking through an area where Quinn finds proof of what he accepts is the chupacabra.
At the farm house, they observe one more news report on the dreaded completely mature Chupacabra, famous to channel on animals. Chava shuts off the television, declaring that it is nonsense and lies. When he goes out, Alex lets Luna know that their granddad is concealing something. He shows her a small musical instrument that he found him playing in the barn. She credits it to more proof of his thought Alzheimer’s.
Later, Alex plays the music box in the barn’s doorway. He turns to see a strange creature after hearing a variety of sounds, including cooing: a small cat-like animal with small, sharp fangs and wings resembling those of a bird. To see if it is hungry, Alex brings it sausages from the house. He promises to shield the area when a storm of thunder comes through.
Memo is looking for Alex when Alex wakes up. He tries to lead him out of the barn, but the young Chupacabra pretends to be Alex, telling him that he has become his friend. Luna appears just as he has calmed Memo down. Additionally at first shouting, they show her that he is agreeable. Luna believes they should kill him, but Alex insists that because it is a cub, they must protect it.
Chava joins Alex in agreement. Alex has referred to Chupa as it approaches him. Chava explains that he discovered the animal hiding nearby after accidentally hitting its parent with his car some nights ago. He keeps it a secret because he is aware that others want to take advantage of it.
Quinn comes back to the house and says he is from an American government agency that looks for rare species for medical use. Finding a tag from the accident site, he has followed it to him. Chava offers to demonstrate a lucha libre move if Quinn does not leave, despite Quinn’s apparent generous intentions.
Memo comes to teach Chupa how to fly after Alex says he will find his family. Taking it to the horse shelter rooftop, Update courageously ‘flies’ into a sheaf underneath. Empowering it to follow, Chupa gets the wings to work a piece before likewise falling into the feed.
In the house, Chava shows Alex a video of El Perico Verde doing his unique move suplex, which he had shown him himself. He reveals that Beto was the fighter, but that he met Alex’s mother and moved to the United States before becoming a professional.
Alex takes out his Game Boy after hearing Chava talk so much about Beto that it makes him sad. He remembers it is his approach to staying away from his sentiments. Taking the video console, Chava tells Alex he should battle him for it. Wearing his Relampago Azul cover, and Alex his dad’s, he inspires him to communicate his thoughts.
Having discovered that his new companion, Chupa, has a mysterious history with his family and is being pursued by the decided Quinn to attempt to tackle his powers, Alex and his family set off on the experience that could only be described as epic to safeguard Chupa from looming risk.
